DANCE PHYSIOTHERAPY
Dancers are the athletes of God. Albert Einstein
At Bodycentric, we understand the unique physical demands of dance. We have extensive experience and are passionate in the assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and prehabilitation of professional and pre-professional Performers, including touring Ballet Companies, Musical Theatre Companies as well as artists performing at the Adelaide Fringe Festival.
Dance Assessment / Injury Prevention Screening - A Dance Assessment is valuable for dancers of all ages and levels. These comprehensive assessments evaluate dance-specific factors that may influence performance and injury risk.
Areas assessed may include:
Dance technique and movement patterns
Foot and ankle control
Core strength and stability
Turnout
Hip strength
Posture and alignment
Flexibility and mobility
Based on our findings, we provide individualised recommendations and exercise programs designed to reduce injury risk and support optimal performance.
* Initial Assessment Consult - 45 minutes.
Pre-Pointe Assessments - Due to the variability in growth rates of girls in the 11 – 14 year age group, readiness for pointe work should be determined by physical development and functional capacity rather than age alone..
Our Pre-Pointe Assessment evaluates the dancer's readiness for pointe through a comprehensive assessment of:
Foot and ankle strength
Flexibility and mobility
Balance and postural control
Core stability
Turnout and lower limb alignment
Dance technique
This assessment helps determine whether it is safe and appropriate to commence pointe work while identifying areas that may benefit from further development. Individualised exercises are prescribed to enhance technique, reduce injury risk and prepare the dancer for the demands of pointe.
* Initial Assessment Consult - 60 minutes.
Dance Injury Treatment, Rehabilitation & Conditioning - We provide evidence-based assessment, treatment and rehabilitation for a wide range of dance-related injuries and overuse conditions.
Treatment may include:
Manual therapy
Exercise rehabilitation
Strength and conditioning
Movement retraining
Dance-specific return-to-performance planning
Real-Time Ultrasound may be utilised where appropriate to assess and retrain muscle function. Individualised rehabilitation programs are designed to facilitate recovery, reduce recurrence and support a safe return to dance.
* Will require Initial Assessment Consult - 45 minutes.
Tertiary Dance Assessments - Many Australian and international tertiary dance institutions require a physiotherapy assessment as part of their application process.
A Tertiary Dance Assessment evaluates a student's physical readiness to undertake the demands of full-time dance training and a potential professional career.
Institutions that may require such assessments include:
Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA)
Queensland University of Technology (QUT)
Victorian College of the Arts (VCA)
Various New Zealand tertiary dance programs
Comprehensive reporting can be provided where required.
* Initial Assessment Consult 60 minutes.
Dance & Ballet Conditioning and Rehabilitation Classes - Dance-specific conditioning sessions are available as One-on-one private sessions.
These sessions focus on developing strength, control, flexibility, endurance and movement efficiency to support performance and reduce injury risk.
Programs may be used for injury rehabilitation, return-to-dance progression or performance enhancement.
* Will require an Initial Assessment Consult - 45 minutes.Additional Treatment Options - Where clinically appropriate, treatment may also incorporate:
Dry Needling
Cupping Therapy
These techniques are utilised as part of an individualised treatment approach and may assist in the management of muscle tension, pain and recovery.
